Some Favorite Photos from 2022 (Lens-Artist Photo Challenge 1-13-23)

Hello Everyone, The first Lens Artist Photo Challenge of 2023 – hosted by Journeys with Johnbo,  invites us to share some favorite photos from 2022.

So this post has some favorite images, not necessarily the best quality or best composition – just some favs.  Ready?

1) Chihuly Red Reeds at Virginia’s Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA).

The photo below is special to me because the greenery is starting to grow back around the reeds. A while back, the museum deep cleaned the Red Reeds and they removed all of the plants. The reeds looked so much better with the green and we are glad to see the growth coming back. The softness of the plants works with the firmness of the glass. The wisps and short verticals in the greenery syncs with the tall vertical glass spikes. In addition, red and green are complementary colors and so when you see this art in person, the green plants really add a lot to the red glass art and we were glad to see the growth.

Speaking of growth, one of my special friends, MJ, quit her job in the financial industry and  for the second half of 2022, she went on multiple retreats and traveled a lot. Whenever she is back in town, we try to meet up for coffee and sometimes we take a long walk and talk. We call them “talk walks” 🙂

2) So…. In the photo below, I tried to capture a selfie of us while walkin’ and talkin’ near the museum.

Also on one of our “talk walks” – I grabbed these next two images

3) Window Shot at Laundromat

In the photo below – we can see the man on his phone while at the laundromat. Later, I realized that my shadow (in the lower part of the image) was in sync with the shape of the man (both on phone and both slightly arched right). Also, the orange wall and stripes on the building near my shadow is in sync with the vertical orange letters on the window. I just like the mood of this photo. And then it has the word “change” on the change machine – which could remind us of life’s change and all that. Without overdoing it – the laundry machines also add to the mood – these tools – machines – that allow us to have hygiene as we wash and dry our textiles. The large garbage can smack in the middle reminded me that some things in life needs to be tossed and moved on from so we can rebound and/or focus on what brings vitality, unity, and wellness.

4) Window Shot at Pizza Place.

I took this next photo to show Cindy G. (here) the Jane Fonda poster.

Cindy started her first business around the same time that Jane Fonda was emerging in the workout world in the 1980s. I also had Jane Fonda’s workout cassette tape in 1987.

Anyhow, later when I looked at this photo, I realized this image had some oddities with the reflections, workers, and misc. details.

Next up – Hiking was a favorite takeaway from 2022.

5) Enjoying the view after a gentle hike (a total of 7 miles of rather easy walking).  This is a selfie that actually came out (most of my selfies do not come out ).

6) Hugging a Tree

I am not sure how you feel about hugging a tree, but “some folks argue” that humans can help the tree when they give it a hug. Hm?

The reason I hugged the tree was for the potential grounding effect. When humans directly touch the earth or touch a tree, it can allow the body’s energy system to connect to the natural electrical charge of the earth, which then results in balancing the meridians in the human body. I invite you to look it up because some forms of arthritis have had symptoms reduction or elimination by grounding with the earth.

7) My least favorite thing about this particular hike was the Xero shoes my spouse bought for me. He loves this brand of shoes and has gone through numerous pairs.  However, I give the Xero shoe a zero! Not for me.

Before the hike, I did try to break in the shoes and get a feel for how they fit. However, the seven miles of gentle hiking showed me that I am just not the right person for these kind of shoes. We passed them on and I went with a brand called Oboz.

My husband LOVES Xero Shoes because he likes the way they feel and he believes they allow the feet to move more naturally with “bending, flexing, and feeling” – However, I believe that technology in a shoe can be a gift.  I want (and need) support from a hiking shoe. I like a little cushion in the shoe because it absorbs the shock and allows support for joints and bones. The Xero shoes did NOT absorb the shock from the walking and my bones ached for days in way I had never felt before. Some folks might say that this means my feet are used to “cast shoes” and I need to give it more time. I say, no thank you.  I think I gave it enough time and maybe it is bias, but I think support in shoes eases the burden of the bio-terrain.  And so if I want technology – like memory foam or gel – inside a cast shoe to take the edge off of walking on hard surfaces – I am going with a shoe that offers this support. I now have a pair of OBOZ hikers that feel amazing with cushion support.

 8) One of my favorite drinks from 2022 was this coffee on the second day of a mountain hike. We brought a baggie filled with Anthony’s organic instant coffee mixed with Keto powdered creamer.  It looked really weak when we were pouring the hot water, but it came out perfect.

Sometimes food and drink tastes better in certain contexts. Like after a fast, the threshold lowers and flavors are sometimes more powerful. Similarly, having hot morning coffee on a cold morning in the middle of a two-day hike can be quote the indulgent experience.

  1. So good Yvette. Good adventures and fabulous wonky photos. I love them. Yes hugging trees, bare feet on the grass, soil or even mud is best to find that true alignment between us, nature and your own spirit being 🙂

    1. Hi bb! You sure are nature man and I like how you worded it “alignment between us, nature and your own spirit being”

And if i take a long car road trip – I try to take off my shoes and touch the ground at least once or twice
And someone asked me how I really know if it is making a difference
And because the charge is invisible I said that most times I cannot instantly feel anything –
But sometimes I think I can tell in just feeling less exhausted and fresher overall at the end of the drive –

    1. Hi ! Thanks for chiming in! I wish I knew the brands you didn’t like but i guess it does not matter because there are so many different models too! So even within a brand their can be a lot of variance.
I am excited about my waterproof Oboz – for their fit and feel / but for easier warm weather hikes I am hunting for a pair of adidas because some of my best hikes were with sneakers – go figure

  2. Looks like a fun hike! My wife and I did a lot of hiking when we spent our winters in Arizona.

I saw a similar Chihuly red reeds at the Phoenix Botanical Garden for one of their attractions a few years ago. I like how the green adds to the display making it look rather Christmasy.

    1. Hi Frank / I am liking Chihuly glass art more and more

And I guess our local museum had the third permanent installation of this kind of glass art – before that- the glass exhibits were temporary installations and I guess now there are many permanent installations and I am glad too

  3. I love the red and green contrast of the Chihuly art and the grass! I call my daily walks with my husband “walkie-talkies” for the same reason as the ones with you and your friend.

It is so important that hiking shoes (any shoes, really) fit well and not all brands work on all feet.

    1. I like the name walkie talkies- and I heard about a doctor who walks with patients when discussing their symptoms and his diagnosis – i think max lugavere mentioned it in his book

And yes – not all brands work in all feet

  4. The “talk walks” sound nice and having stimulating conversation and getting exercise at the same time – good going for both of you Yvette. Your selfies came out great. Like you, I have to have a good supporting shoe or I’m not happy as I feel like I may lose my footing, even if it feels cushy on the feet. I asked for a recommendation for Winter hiking boots from a woman who was a walker and at the time owned a “sensible shoe store” for family footwear. It is where I got all my shoes since we moved here in 1966. She recommended New Balance and I got them. I hated them the first Winter and I’d never had shoes that covered my ankles and I wore bubble wrap around my ankles to cushion them from the tops of the boots. I even Googled to see if I was lacing them up incorrectly. I toughed it out and year #2 was better. I’m happy to report they now feel like slippers!

    1. Linda! You really have the New Balance a full chance – and I smiled to hear if the bubble wrap – and it reminds me if we can get used to anything if we give it enough time !
Or maybe you just really found what works for you

And by the way- I love when you post and insert some down views of your sneakers –

And I am sure I did not give the xero shoes long enough and maybe I have a fixed mindset and I just prefer cushion and a different feel! But if it works for me and I feel amazing after a hike versus aching in bones – well then I will keep doing what I have been doing Al if my adult life –
When I worked in hospitality I wore good shoes and bought shock absorbing insoles and I believe that protected my joints
My boyfriend in 1992 was a tennis player and his dad wore down his joints from sports and he talked about the need for support on certain terrain –
      Hmmmm
So I get the less is more and barefoot primal ideas – but I want technology
      ☀️🙏

      1. It is like a runner – the more you run and thump, thump down on your joints each time your foot strikes the pavement, you have to have good cushioning shoes or you end up like your 1992 tennis player friend. All that running and bouncing down is not good for your bones – walking is so much more gentle. I think the next Winter hiking books, I will be used to the over-the-ankle style, but it was tough at first and yes, bubble wrap was my friend to break ’em in!

  5. Looks like a beautiful hike! I’m not an overnighter hiker, but now I do want to try Anthony’s organic instant coffee! And I totally know what you mean, the situation can make something taste (and be enjoyed) way more than normal!!

    1. Hi Lisa
When we were at my step daughter’s house she surprised us and had a huge bag of Anthony’s organic instant coffee
And it really is not like instant coffee of the 80s (do you remember Sanka? Gross !)
And the situation can change so much
Hope your month is going well

      1. So, I ended up going on line and ordering some of that coffee! I want to try it for our next trip, and maybe use it at home on occasion. I’ve ordered Anthony’s products before. I also risked trying the powered coconut milk. Don’t know if I’ll like it, but I like to try new things.

  6. I love these photos you shared and your thoughts as well. It usually is the story behind each photo that stands out. I really like the how you interpreted the sign Change in the laundromat photo – and in turn changed and added to my perception of such a mundane place.

Good to hear you now have a pair of hiking shoes that offer support. Footwear can be such an individual thing. A pair of shoes that works well for someone may not work well for someone else, and all of us are physically different. Wishing you many more enjoyable walks 😊

    1. Hi Mabel – thanks for sharing your feedback – my next hike might actually involve me using some cross trainers from adidas – they are not waterproof and so not ideal for certain weather or terrain – but some of my best hikes have been with adidas

      1. Sounds like you know your hiking gear, Y. Hope the Adidas cross trainers hold up if you do choose to go with them. May your hikes come with good weather 😊

  7. Great photos and I love the stories of how they came to be. Finding the right hiking boot, or any shoe for that matter, is so important. I am Solomon for everything, but it took a long time to find them.

    1. I just looked at the Solomon site and I think I tried on a pair when I found my oboz
      – the store had a large rock to use for trying out the shoe/hiker and I think I tried their mid-gore-Tex hiker
Either way – glad you found the brand you love and I will keep this brand in mind the next time I shop for shoes – even tho we are all so different and then the styles change – I cannot stand the high tops

      1. I bough the mid-high hiking boots and the hiking shoes. Everything is the same except the uppers. I use the shoes for everyday walking.

  8. A fun post Yvette, loved your originality on this one! As for the shoes, I had the same experience with Hokas. All of my friends swear by them, my experience has been terrible. Different strokes for different folks as they say! Wishing you all the best for the New Year!

    1. Hi Tina! Thanks for reading and I have not heard of Hokas and looked them up – they remind me of Nike or Brooks – and I love how you said “different strokes for different folks”

    1. Hi JT – shoes are such an individual thing and you might not like the Oboz. Believe it or not – my favorite shoes for hiking so far have been a pair of adidas sneakers – I was actually looking for a similar pair yesterday – they were light weight and had excellent cushion and side support. Maybe they were cross trainers –
Anyhow – I do know xero brand are not for me
      Thanks for reading

  9. Cheers to starting out the year with a splash with those red hot chili shots at VMFA Yvette.
Great photos and what a wonderful year. Love the selfie of you too looking so happy and adorbs in your ZERO shoes even tho they were a zero.. I so laughed at that! 7 miles is long enough to give them a good try.. of course I hug trees by they are all falling down right now here, so I don’t dare. Finally, How cute of you to post me my name with Our Dear Jane Fonda’s book in the window. Thanks for that. Love it!! 💗

    1. Hi Cindy – I am so happy you came by to see that I mentioned your name — because I have been meaning to come back and leave you a link – I still might

But that made me so happy you read that and I do think of you when I see her early workout stuff

Also – that photo with my hubs is not my favorite one of us – but I shared it because I feel that joy too – I mean I do feel it genuinely in other photos but there was just “something”
Anyhow – i forgot to mention that I also like Ecco brand but xero are not for me at all!

Awww that’s sweet. I have those books as well still.
I loved your pictures of you both look so happy and in love which is so heartfelt.

  10. “Talk walks”! Perfect! Could it also be walk talks? No. That would just be talking about walking rather than actually walking. Far less cool.
Great pics. Now I want to go hug a tree! 🙂
