Monday Morning Blooms: Tulip Leftovers (28MARCH2022)

Happy Monday.

Today, I am sharing more spring 2022 tulip photos (first post was here). Some gardening can easily be done with containers and this year’s “container” tulips sure went through some phases. After they stood tall, like a thin cup, they opened, and then a freeze came and they bent.

They recovered from that freeze and stood tall again. Then, as they aged and looked tattered –  they still contributed so much in beauty and pollen. 

Here are the tulips right after the freeze.

The tulips drooped over during the icy night and this photo shows them thawing out.

I took this image to show author Brad (link coming soon) as we were comment chatting about tulips earlier this month. 🙂 I was surprised the tulips could endure a freeze.

A few days later, after the freeze, the same tulips were standing tall again, but the petals were now tattered – giving us an entirely different look.  Also signaling change and reminding me that beauty takes on different forms and also that spring was moving right along.

There were some bees buzzing around (surprised to see so many bees in early March) and later I realized they were mostly here for what the tulips were offering up.

I like that last quote a lot – let’s all be like flowers and NOT COMPETE – let’s just bloom as we do our thing (we can get ideas and benchmarks by looking outside, but let’s make sure the sneaky, unhelpful comparison stuff does not creep in).

  2. This is such a unique post, Yvette. The quotes go with it so beautifully. I love the non-competing flower quote. If we could all do that, there would be so much less strife, so much fewer hurt feelings of those who did not feel their bloom was beautiful enough. This post spoke to me – or more so to young Marsha who struggled so much with self-worth and self-confidence. I vote for art, though the others are lovely, too.

      Thanks for casting a vote on topics – I am leaning towards books right now because I can add some art or garden talk that way….
      And love what you wrote about the younger you and how in society we tend to “not feel their bloom was beautiful enough”
      And sometimes the pervasive message is of “NOT being enough” and it can be so erroneous and misleading !
      I like to remind folks that some of us our fish, some horses, and some monkeys (well more than three but those make a good starting point)
      And a fish will never run like a horse – never climb like a monkey – it was made to swim!
      Whereas a horse and monkey have a different water experience that would never “measure up” or be enough compared to what a fish can do in water!
      We are wired different and let’s celebrate who we are / and were- and enjoy if more of who we are still to become no matter the age of life stage!
      And funny how having tulips this year was such a small pleasure (because I think I mentioned only my daffodil bulbs survive and I only recently realized I could container tulip !
      So cheers to the small joys this month!

  3. If it means more photos like these I vote for gardening. But you could always link that to art: there are one or two paintings of flowers around 😉

    1. Oh thanks DJ Clive – and I didn’t put music on the options because you have that covered so well (ha – half kidding – and I do have two music posts getting dusty / one on Pink Floyd and the other on Led Zeppelin – but not even close to a week or a month)
      And think I am going to go with books – keep ya posted

      1. Kind of you to say that, but there are many others around who do what I do – better! I look forward to those posts but I’m not holding my breath. And it’s good to know that my vote and a half counted for so much – it’s like being in an election or referendum here 😂

          And yes – trust me I know there are a lot of folks who do music posts – but better? Now DJ Clive A can you please read the ending of this post again about not comparing blooms!! Same goes for blogs and blog approaches (not that you were really comparing but that superlative – well…)
          It comes down to a matter of taste and so many factors.
          And I have the WordPress reader often suggest some music posts and I skip right over of them without ever looking back!
          For many reasons – first, I am not into it – second,
          I really don’t want to keep adding new bloggers to my feed and if I do – it will definitely not be to have more music posts in my life. I just like yours because of the way you bring yourself into the posts (your past or the preferences – etc) and do those bits of research and then write succinct –
          So with that said….
          There are NOT many others around here that do what you do because only Clive can do what Clive’ does.

      Your comment and for the suggestion – I thought about the flower and quote or flower and a poem – but already feel a little burned out (just a little) with a lot of flower posts lately – hmmmm
      And so I am thinking that if I go for the “books” topic I might be able to have one or two flower&quote posts ….

  6. You are much further along into spring. No tulips here. Your photos show what is to come. I like Norah’s suggestion of a flower + quote for your April project.

    1. Hi ally bean! We are zone 7 and so a bit earlier than north and Midwest areas – cheers to when your tulips (and other spring stuff) bloom!

      And thanks for the feedback for my question – right now leaning towards books with a couple of flower and quote posts – because too many flower posts would leave me wilting – hahaha

      Right now I am thinking about the book theme as the best option for my mood and interests – and hey – thankfully that is part of the joy of blogging – we let things unfold with our interests – (and never compare blooms- ha)

  13. I vote for art because I know so little about it and find it so fascinating to have some insights. Although I also love gardening and photos of your garden might be a little easier to post when you’re busy. Books – I have such a big tbr pile it makes me feel guilty: all the great new work I’m not reading, all the classics I haven’t come to yet. Well I love books too. But my vote is for art 😊 The tulips in decay are as beautiful as when they were perfect – I like the aesthetic of of appreciating things for what they are through all their phases. Thanks!

    1. Thanks for your vote, Maria, and even though I am leaning towards books I am not fully decided yet – but I know I need to schedule April – so hmmmmm

      also, thanks for your feedback on the decaying tulips. Right now they leftover greens are another angle to ponder – because even though it is tempting to take them out – this is a nourishing phase for the bulbs – (can feel a teaching point with that – like how the blooming phase can be so showy and wonderful – it is not really when the growth or fortification takes place… and so we humans need to remember that the quiet, nourishing phases – that might seem lackluster or like little is happening – are in fact crucial times for healthy and fuel fecundity.

Well this is true – years ago when I worked in Holland I was amazed that they took all the flowerheads off the tulips in the bulb fields leaving the stalks because they contributed to the growth of the bulb. I thought why not sell the cut flowers? But that’s a different business and the business of bulbs is making big ones. Good luck with your choices!

        1. Thanks for sharing that about the experience from your time in Holland (which sounds like a cool place to work !)
          And funny you should Mention holland bulbs – I just got the cutest little boxes of spring bulbs from holland – they were on clearance and think the overstock had something to do with Co-vid but not sure.
          I hope they are still viable and I will know in a few weeks!

  17. A few days after the freeze, then thaw, the tulips looked more like irises. I too am surprised you have bees already. How about gardening for a them? ‘Tis the season. I’m so far behind at least my suggestion will be before April begins (but barely).

    1. Hi- and good suggestion about planting garden items for bees! I will have one post to address that – and Virginia is zone 7 so we do have bees early but never saw the hefty bumble bees that early – it was nice and thanks for the comment

  21. Thanks! His style is v engaging. I too sometimes struggle with the leaving of comments or liking posts when there are log ins or sign ups – and give up! No such difficulties with WordPress reader (usually). Best advice there for the genuine blogger I think is ‘Keep Improving’ 🤞🏼
