Thursday Doors – East Coast Color (10FEB22)

Hello readers, this week’s Thursday Doors features East Coast Color

The yellow door and the brown/orange porch –  – wait – what color is this?  Is it “Burnt Sienna” ??? Any of the painters out there will know that Burnt Sienna is one of the most important colors to have in your paint bin. There are many reasons but one of them is because if you need to darken a color – you don’t use black, you use complementary colors. And the Paintbasket site noted “Burnt sienna is orange enough to act as a compliment for the blue sky and red enough to act as a compliment to the green foliage.”
Love the two doors angled like that – but it was also the mail slot that stood out (right below DC’s metro map). I wonder what the future of the US Postal System will be?  Will the USPS stop delivering mail to homes and everyone will be forced to get a PO Box or mail chute and then pick up their mail?  Will UPS or Fed Ex step in and take over? Will Amazon take it on?

Not sure if I shared these next doors yet, but here are large wooden doors from the “Korean Grill” inside the Guitar Hotel in South Florida

Speaking of the Guitar Hotel, last week’s post (here) had enough content and so I waited to share this jacket from Sammy Davis Jr (who was from the east coast and he added color to the world with his songs, comedy, and entertainment).

I was going to share Candy Man (here) but went with “I’ve got to be me” because it can be such a great reminder for us to celebrate our uniqueness more and more.

  1. I did enjoy the Sammy Davis clip, Yvette. Thanks for that! Interesting about burnt sienna,too, and I gather the US postal system is in crisis? The things I don’t know!

Hi restless Jo – thanks for your comment and yes, the Postal system has had problems on and off for a while – but I read that this last holiday season they did well as far as reaching certain delivery goals. And some areas are better than others- or worse – for example – last month the town of Petersburg was on the news as residents said they didn’t get mail for 8 or 9 days??

      1. Oh Yes!! Murphy definitely has burnt sienna coloring in him. I just googled red bay horse and burnt sienna hair and they show the colors next to each other! No wonder I love that color so MUCH! ❤️🐴❤️

      Of what was in back then to see those huge collars or flaps….

    1. Hi Janet! I like those gardens too! The first time we saw them was about five years ago – and then seeing them in this hotel was like they were on steroids ‘ — haha – largest vertical garden I have ever seen and nice to be near

  17. That was colorful and fun! I loved Sammy Davis Jr’s coat.

    Here the Post Office has installed big banks or of mailboxes like like P.O. boxes in all the newer neighborhoods and you have to go to your assigned box to pick up your mail and if you live further than a half mile from your box you have to go the actual post office to collect packages as they don’t deliver them. For now that’s the way I see them going…no more at home deliveries. I wonder how long the older neighborhoods here will have at home mail deliveries?

      I wonder how long it will be as well.
      I saw a letter carrier walking in the rain today – with an old school postal hard hat and just seemed classic!
      And wondered how long those neighborhoods will have that as well.

      So then reason your comment today added much to that thought – I think they might switch to delivering to Homes every three days maybe?

      Not sure but a change is coming for sure

  18. That Burnt Sienna had me fooled Yvette. I thought it was redwood – I’d make a poor decorator, though I like the pops of teal on the last house. The chat area reminds me a little of a Starbucks lounge area.

        1. The last handful of Starbucks I have been into have less cloth and more vinyl rot plastic (wipe down materials) and I wonder if this is a trend post pandemic

        2. It’s been a while since I’ve been in a Starbucks – we had one in our building at one time. I’ll bet you’re right … they probably put “good stuff” away until the pandemic is over as the alcohol wipes would rot the leather for sure.

  19. I had no idea about Burnt Sienna and that fits nicely with my non painting background. Here in Canada I wonder about the postal service as well. Those massive wooden doors must have been quite the installation feat. Perhaps a crane required?

    1. Hi sue! You are so right about the doors being a huge installation project!
      And I bet you see a lot of burnt sienna in some of the places you and D visit in your travels – so even if not painting it is a nice earth color to see in rocks and terrain

  23. Nice doors. Thank you. And thank you about the burnt sienna. I use sienna a lot, don’t know why. Now I know I can use it to darken other colours. (Though I’m not sure about mixing it with blue…)

    1. Hello – I am not totally sure about how to use the burnt Sienna with blue but I do recall in my painting days that I always had extra tubes of Burnt Sienna – or a painting kit would include 5 oz tubes of paint and then the Sienna would be double the size….
      and things are well, just a little busy middle of the month but caught up now.
      And really enjoyed your street art again – esp that eyes post – be over to comment soon
