Guitar Hotel & Casino in South Florida (Lens-Artist Photo Challenge #184)

Hello Readers,

The theme for the Lens-Artists’ Photo Challenge is “Travel Has Taught Me…

I have been wanting to share some photos from the Guitar hotel and Casino in South Florida and so today is the day.

Traveling to the Guitar Hotel taught me a little bit more about our current culture.

Let’s start with the exterior view:

This hotel (in Hollywood, Florida) cost around $1.5 billion dollars and it is owned by the tribe that owns the Hard Rock chain.  At night, they have high tech LED lights that fill in the neck and headstock.

***

***

Traveling to this establishment taught me that folks today worship musicians and actors, we love to dine out at fun places, stay in cool rooms, and then many drop a lot of money with the thrill of gambling.

***

Part of the celebrity worship is having clothing items hanging from famous people.

Here are Jimi Hendrix pants.

A Lady Gaga Dress

A Jennifer Lopez dress (and by the way, I am still disgusted by her performance at the 2020 Super Bowl – such poor taste – two thumbs down – but this dress on display shows a different (classier) side that J.Lo used to have).

Above: Clothes from the rock band called Paramore, formed in 2004, and not sure I know any of their music.
Above: Madonna, Chilli, and Cher dresses

***

Next up is a suit from Italian singer Andrea Bocelli (and we have a gambler in the lower left – and blurred for privacy)

Champagne Song from Bocelli

***

Next up – Shirts from Pat and Lolly Vegas

The Vegas brothers were Mexican-American 1960’s musicians of Indigenous descent.

__

Let’s see another side to this place- where the money exchange happens – and note the snob appeal to the right – the High Limit Slots.

In my very humble opinion, I think the gambling places are becoming too popular. Here in Richmond, VA they keep trying to pass a bill to bring in a casino.

I am not against this hobby, entertainment, or sport (whatever you want to call it) but perhaps it is more fun (and less damaging to society and the everyday person) if we have designated places for it like Las Vegas, Atlantic City, coastal areas, and those cruise ships that allow day trips.

It seems like casinos are popping up everywhere now and it might be too much. Also, the NFL games now allow so many advertisements for gambling on the game outcomes. Sigh…. The United States allows all these drug commercials and now the gambling seems to be flooding in as well – hmmm – not sure what to think.

I was recently chatting with a couple of bloggers about the TV show Monk – and while the show has some flaws (right C?) – there are some really BRILLIANT episodes. And one of the great episodes is the 2005 Mr. Monk Goes to Vegas (S3E14) – because in that episode they masterfully showed the “many sides” to Vegas – including having Randy Disher get sucked in (and then rescued) with the lure and black hole of gambling.

***

Putting the dangers of gambling addiction aside, the cultural artifacts (and building design) at the Guitar Hotel were amazing to experience. Like how fun is it to marvel at this Les Paul guitar? – such a work of art.

The staff and workers throughout the Guitar Hotel were awesome.  I mean they were “Disney World nice” and at least three employees offered to take a photo for us.  I didn’t ask, they were walking by (one was security) and they just offered. They also let you take as many photos as you want – and most casinos say “no cameras” and so that was a nice freedom.

As we wind down this post – here is the piano wall

And the exit to go to the hotel rooms (on this side) has Jimi Hendrix there to escort you out…. (excuse me, while I…. um, go…)

Thanks for checking out this post.

Have you been to this hotel? I am glad we had the chance to finally visit this modern architectural beauty after driving by it on different trips.

  1. Yvette, a fabulous start to my Sunday and I love these photos! What an amazing fun place and wow, Champagne (in French please!) is incredible!

    1. Hi Annika, glad to be part of your Sunday – and appreciate your comment because I was not sure which song to include in this post – ut I wanted at least one artist featured to go with the clothes – and I just happened to be in the Bocelli mood after seeing his Armani suit…. ha
and of course the language part would appeal to you amiga

  2. Celebrity worship is the accepted form of churching these days. You can’t praise Jesus but you heap the good stuff on musicians, movie stars and even (yikes!) reality show ‘celebrities’ without a second look. What up with that?

A Super Bowl halftime show in “good taste”?

What is “Few and far between” Alex . . .

I get the dresses and the jackets, because the threads are full of personality. But the pants seem a tad bit random to me. Feels like a fraternity prank . . I stole Jimi’s pants!

That hotel is super cool, thank you for the tour Yvette.

    1. Hi M,

I thought the pants were a little lackluster at first – and even almost used it in a different post because I have a shadow photo of me that syncs with the image – I will have to show you it –

but then when you read about the pants it makes more sense. They are velvet (that was edgy back then) and also they were part of the “counter culture” – here is what th sign said:

“In addition to being the greatest electric guitar player of all time, Jimi Hendrix was a true icon of counterculture fashion. He frequented the hip London Boutiques of the late 60’s and created a style that helped define the hippie era, which was heavily influenced by his Cherokee heritage. THESE VELVET TROUSERS WERE FROM HIS PERSONAL WARDROBE”

Didn’t know he was Cherokee – cool to that – but I am thinking I would say Eddie Van Halen might have been better – but it depends on taste – and so maybe the sign should say “ONE OF THE GREATEST GUITAR PLAYERS”

      RE: Culture Worship
good point about the reality stars (and how some can become such a powerful influencer to where they can impact companies and their success – crazy)
And speaking of worship centers – NFL stadiums are the biggest worships centers of all time (as the Bengals and Chiefs play right now….)

      1. Jimi Hendrix defined a culture, and I guess that helps to put some context into the pants display. Makes sense to me.

Music was different back in the day. Everything about it was different. Word of mouth or hearing a song or learning about a new album release on the radio. Then you had to go to a real live record shop where the record shop peeps knew EVERYTHING about music. And then going home and breaking out a fresh new LP and laying that needle down . . . the scratchy prelude and then . . . bliss.

It doesn’t happen like that anymore.

Sports IS religion in this country. You can curse the Pope but lay off Coach!

        1. Hi M – and just got done reading your recent post and of course you didn’t mention it (because you likely don’t want to self promote) but dude, it really fit the theme I was lightly getting at here in my post -but of course you had many layers to it –
but just wanted to add in this part because oh my goodness – your rant was anointed – hahahaha

“This absurdist portrait has snaked its way into every facet of our society. Millionaire ballers lecture us on social responsibility with bumper sticker slogans whilst hitting the snooze on their misbehaving peers. Reality show characters cry about the ills of celebrity when most people wouldn’t be able to pick them out of a lineup. Judges have traded in their day jobs for television gigs while jurors have become sensationalist authors.”

Re: “had to go to a real live record shop where the record shop peeps knew EVERYTHING about music”
ahhhhh – yes – I was young but I recall those record shops and the brilliant workers –
and we had one of those huge wooden furniture pieces that had the speakers and turntable – really different times

        2. Haha! You have me pegged Prior.

I’m not sure how we get from here to wherever it is we are going, but I’m fairly certain we are not alone in that query. Every time, every age, has its challenges.

The record store was my Google once upon a time. My Alexa, my Siri . . . they knew anything I needed to know and a lot of stuff I hadn’t even thought to ask.

I was JUST talking about that huge wooden furniture piece with the speakers and turntable. Two sections? Formed a corner sectional kinda thing? I thought it was the greatest thing ever.

          Liked by 1 person

        3. Hi – ours had the sections too!!

and funny you mentioned how average the Jimi pants looked at first because I did thing the same – until I saw they were velvet and the time in which he wore them – ((looking fly))
and here is the picture I was mentioning with the shadow photo I took in November – let me know what you think 🙂

  3. Interesting to see a ‘museum’ in a casino. I think another blogger may have shared images of the guitar recently, or maybe it was another guitar hotel. I’m not sure.

    1. Hi Norah – it really feels like a museum!
A while ago, I did share an image we grabbed when it was still under construction

Now you have me curious to see some other posts about this hotel – and one that was in the readersaid the Seminole Tribe bight
“the Mirage Hotel and Casino in a $1.075 billion deal” and will replace it with a Guitar Hotel
“The second guitar-shaped Hard Rock Hotel and Casino will be built on the Las Vegas Strip where The Mirage hotel currently stands. The first is located in Hollywood, Florida.

“When complete, Hard Rock Las Vegas will be a fully integrated resort welcoming meetings, groups, tourists and casino guests from around the world to its nearly 80 acre center-Strip location,” Chairman of Hard Rock International Jim Allen said ”

  4. What a strange place! Your photos are amazing but the building as a whole is one of those things that gets other countries puzzling about American taste! A bit like Monk, really 😂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hi C, many of us are puzzled here too – and it seems the extremely wealthy Seminole Tribe has found an IV into the vein as they lure people in for a destination experience. They found their niche – and I guess that a handful of years ago – this tribe “loaned the state of FL a lot of money” in exchange for a blackjack license ?? Puzzling indeed….

      1. The impression I get is that a number of US states are as corrupt as the UK government, and it seems FL is one of them. Money buys influence, power and politicians, doesn’t it.

        1. Hi – I think Florida has some excellent political leaders these days (IMHO) but there are always the sneaky ones that creep in – and too many are investors in Big Pharma or live in a bubble and don’t see the Big Phamr problem here and see that the government not only funnels more money there way – but feed the problem
and with that said – I am no expert in that area and so I trust that those that are more knowledgeable help keep folks accountable.

          Liked by 1 person

        2. You mean DeSantis, Rubio and Scott? They don’t get a good press here! Politics is all about money, about who has bought who, regardless of affiliation. The older I get the more cynical I become!

          Liked by 1 person

        3. well the press is not always representing what the majority of people think not do they always show what is really going on – so much propaganda and so much censoring –

        4. Our press is mostly right wing, some of it rabidly so, but anyone like these three who are associated in the memory with 45 gets a bad press – not that Florida is covered much here anyway, to be honest. I hope yours is more objective, or is it all owned by the GOP? Here, the main nationals are very pro-Conservative Party, and some of the owners are friendly with government ministers. Objectivity isn’t their strong point!

  7. Wow! Your photos are amazing. I’m not sure why I’ve never heard of the Guitar Hotel, but now I want to visit to see it. I’m not much of a gambler. The 2-3 times that I’ve been, I would usually take $20, spend a little of it, and then get bored, but the buildings are usually pretty fun to look at. Cheers!

    1. Hi – this hotel part of this resort is pretty new (we saw it being built in 2019 and 2020) but the Hard Rock stuff was there since 2004 and I guess that this is where “Anna Nicole Smith, who was staying at the resort, died in her hotel suite on February 8, 2007.”

And I know many folks wh gable the way you do – they take a certain amount and then go and play. sounds like a good way to hit the slots or even visit a table? I am not into gambling but I sometimes like card games.

  8. Can’t say I’ve heard about this place before, but when we were travelling through the states in our Motor Home, casinos offered free overnight parking, free shuttle to the casino, and usually free dinner. Big business.

    1. Hi – I wonder if the casinos do that promoting today? I am not sure they do – but in the early 1990s – we could get #3.00 prime rib dinners at casinos and sometimes free drinks – and didn’t even have to gamble (or we’d play the nickel slots – hahaha)
and I also remember the day cruises – went on one in 94 with my mother – where the cruise was almost free because it went 20 miles out and the gambling began. we didn’t gamble – just ate and enjoyed low cost nonalcoholic drinks 🙂

  9. GREAT post, GREAT photos. Interesting place! I’m with you on the drugs and gambling. If if you’re a non-participant, the ads are in your face constantly! Colorado approved online betting in recent years and the tv ads are non-stop. Ad nauseam!

    1. Oh John, thanks for sharing because Ad nauseam here too with the NFL ads. A young girl in a boy’s baseball jacket and t-shirt – plain hair and making the plug for free money to gamble with…. and as if our society didn’t have enough unhealthy distractions.

And your comment reminded me that Blackhawk in Colorado was another one of those special places that folks could go to – this online option is worrisome to say the least

and wishing you a great rest of your day

  10. It looks like you had fun photographing this hotel Prior. I like the exterior, but all the clothes wouldn’t impress me. You did a great job photographing them. Shooting through glass is not easy. Well done!

    1. Hi thanks for noting the challenge of the glass – I did not do very well with the Andrea Bocelli Armani suit – but many of them came out nice and clear – and it can be a challenge – also, I only spend about an hour on the photographing and then zipped things away to just relax and be present.
      🙂

    1. Hi Cindy – thanks for the comment – and I was wearing one of my favorite travel dresses – there is a photo of my husband and I in this post and you can see the dress – it is amazing because it can be washed in a sink (if needed) and aired dry. It doesn’t take up much room in a travel bag and it doesn’t wrinkle. It can be dressed down and worn over a swimsuit – or it can be dressed up a little and worn to lunch.
But some folks at the guitar hotel were dressed quite dapper.

      1. you’re so welcome Yvette!!! oh i saw a lil picture.. these old eyes.. ugh.. I’ll have to go back add look again.. this sounds like my kind of dress and the reason I might travel.. what is the brand? I might need to borrow it.. lol 🤣

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Hahaha – I am not sure of the brand anymore because I cut all my tags off – they sometimes scratch my neck. And I almost got rid of the dress in 2021 – but it is in great condition and worth keeping – and did I mention it also can beat the heat – I had a few others – like one from Valerie Bertnelli’s line (which I got on clearance because I am almost always a bargain shopper – hahah – do not have anyone designing clothes for me over here – lol)

        3. Hi Cindy – the Gallivance bloggers (I will see if I can find their link) actually inspired me years ago when they shared about traveling light and with light weight clothes (water wicking fabric and whatnot) – even though there are times when we need to pack a lot – and have options or we just might want to wear something that is not travel friendly – and for those times we need to go for it – but their advice was that we can do more and be more present when we have less stuff weighing us down.
I just tossed a little black jacket that was on the “best travel items” shelf because I refuse to wear it again – but it had long sleeves – a light hood and nice length and trim around the waist – it could be used for pajamas or for a light going out jacket – I need to get a new one but that is an example of the kind of item to have in a travel queue – lightweight black pants, a few dresses, I even have a blazer that is nylon – just in case I need that for a meeting or something –

        4. I love it Yvette! Oh great I’ll wait to hear and I agree.. I choose one or 2 colors and I can pack a carry on for 2 weeks and rotate clothes. It’s those trips when I need to have fancy occasions too that do me in. … I love the way you think with the P.J’s.. right now it’s colder inside than out so i where my clothes and coats to bed some night.. 🤣🤣🤣💖

  13. The gambling craze is awful. NBA as well. Now that I’m watching (Slovenian) Luka Dončić in Dallas Mavericks a bit more regularly, it’s becoming clear to me how fixed everything is. You can tell which games they are tanking. I tend to think that they don’t even tell Luka in advance that he must lose because it makes him as mad as me. We grow up differently here. That’s why he is all for the team. I enjoyed seeing you smile thought. And the shape of the building is pretty astonishing.

  14. Well this was a fun post and I’d not heard of this place but very creative what they did – the museum area of clothes was interesting as well. Sure didn’t look like a J Lo togs did it – quite tamed down. Amazing the shape of this building – I was thinking it might be like a Hard Rock Cafe.

Hi – the hotel is owned by the same Seminole tribe that owns Hard Rock – so your thinking is in line with that. and that was a movie dress for JLo – but I think she had a tamed down time – or I might be wrong – but the super bowl performance she did with the other artist was raunchy – with the fake action of tying up her hands? what? In my view it was raunchy and disrespectful to women and not appropriate for the many children that watch the superbwol (just more sexing them up at a young age) and then in that same Super Bowl they were paying homage to the female NFL assistant coach – who was dressed in much different attire –

      Liked by 1 person

      1. See, it seemed reminiscent of how Hard Rock Cafe is. Yes, JLo with the raunchy attire and if not stripped down, her clothes are too tight. I’m glad I’m not the only one thinking that Yvette.

He is going to be kicking off a new tour and a rap song that debuted last week had so many word bleeped out, it was difficult to tell what it was about. I’ve never been a fan of before and surely not now. I don’t know about this world and it makes me feel old, like the “Get off my lawn” guy.

And the lady Gaga dress was colorful and fun but I hate the one sleeve dress (think it had one sleeve) and that Jlo dress was from a movie so maybe not her Personal style?
