Lynard Skynard Cover Band (#Treesquare July 25; Lens Artists #158)

Hello Readers – Combining #Treesquares with Lens-Artists’ because the theme is “along back country roads” – and last June, we ventured into the country to hear a Lynard Skynard  cover band (called Street Survivor) at the Caroline County fair. We knew a couple of the band members and it was a fun afternoon.

Band Name Trivia.

Did you know the band is from Jacksonville, FL? (not Alabama)

Guess which other names Lynard Skynard had before settling into their name?

It was very hot this day and we had some “fresh from the farm” Chicharrones (very filling and $5.00 for a large bag – I had never had fresh pork rinds so that was an experience too).

I thought of Clive & BB with sharing the band images today – and also have some of the old sewing machines to show Tierney later this year.  Because walking around that day they had CBD oil, quilts, and a tractor competition.

 I do not have Skynard songs on my playlists, but as the music played that day, I sure did enjoy going down memory lane.  I knew every song they played – from childhood radio play. You know, drink your milk, have your oatmeal and enjoy Lynard Skynard on the radio. Something like that! There is something refreshing about their songs (IMO).

Some people danced (wish I had the guts to get out there with them) and some waved their hands. One lady, with a walker, cried when it was over and that was inspiring to see her so moved.  The people at her table were   cool.  I gave her a hug as we left (and grabbed a picture – ha – to maybe share later).

    1. Hi Trent
      It sure did not and I read that the band was teased as only having “one percent of talent” and was another reason to change the name
      And then they had a high school PE coach (Leonard skinner) who have they’ll trouble because of their long hair and so it was a little bit snarky to choose that name ((and or connected to some character with that name)
      But the PE teacher later introduced them to a huge audience in some Jacksonville concert….. reminding some of us that – yes indeed – this band is not from Alabama and started in Jacksonville Fla

      1. So funny about the PE teacher. If I remember correctly, there was some racist event that made Neil Young write “Southern Man”. The people in Leonard Skinner took issue with that song, so did “Sweet Home Alabama” as an answer to Neil, though I’ve read that they actually loved Neil’s music. I’ve also read that not one of the band members lived there when they wrote the song.

        2. I’m not sure. After I wrote this comment, I found an article (online Country Music Magazine or some such) about it. Although they did write it in response to Southern Man and another song, Alabama (I don’t know this song), they actually liked him a lot and the feeling was mutual. Neil said he hated the song Alabama, but if it influenced Sweet Home Alabama, it had redeemed itself and was worth writing – he played SWA several times, but not his own song! So all was cool in the end 🙂

        4. Oh thanks for such interesting history on that. Really had me pause and just think for a minute – ponder the times in which those artists wrote and imagining them connecting like that over themes

  9. Thank you for the mention. I started to post a reply last night, but it was late and I must have deleted it by mistake! This looks a fun afternoon, and your photos are great, though someone needs to tell the guitarist that Slash wasn’t in Lynyrd Skynyrd! Amazing video of their signature song, such a tragic loss a couple of years later.

          Not just saying this – but I am eager to see what unfolded for Tuesday tunes this week! I just finished many hours of writing (love it – but read it to “take it easy” with some jams and commentary from DJ Clive)

  13. Yvette – in our City, we have a “Concerts in the Park” series every Summer at the park two blocks away. It’s an outside venue and each concert is a tribute band. I needn’t attend in person as I can hear the songs from here and they are bands and songs I remember. They also have a Lynard Skynard tribute band. I enjoyed this video. I was not a big Skynard fan, but loved Freebird and as I watched the video, I waited for the transition from singing to guitar playing (at 6:11) and the crowd went crazy when that transition came, just like me. The girl in the yellow bathing suit with the sunburn made me smile … everyone was moving and waving their arms and you won’t get that nowadays as everyone has their smartphone up taking a video or a photo (if they can get away with it and the band doesn’t get mad). How we have changed as music lovers, wanting to capture the concert to post later on social media, instead of living in the moment. I’ve never seen a video of this band, never thought to look on YouTube and the styles, the crowds just took me back to a simpler time, college days and going to concerts with friends … an eternity ago.

    1. Hi Linda – that video was new for me too and reminded me again what a treasure trove of resources YouTube has for the world to enjoy!
      I will go and check out the six minute Marin you mentioned – and you are so right about the simpler feel and the presence you mentioned –
      Oh and too bad that lynard Skynard had stress from the fame – it is understandable too

      1. And I had the same feeling last night Yvette upon learning of the death of Dusty Hill. Now ZZ Top was a little like Lynard Skynard … I knew a handful of tunes, never went to a concert or bought albums. So, Twitter posted the notice of his death in their “What’s Happening” feature. So it was deja vu like your post … watching some concert goers from back in the day. Dusty Hill, with that long beard, was always the most-recognizable member of the band. How long since I heard “Cheap Sunglasses”???

      2. P.S. – YouTube is great and I use it for much more than when I remember a song and want to hear it. It’s a great source of info for how-to info rather than studying a manual or tutorials for computer questions.

        1. Well said and some of those manuals never included how to rebuild things on your own and so in another way – YouTube empowers people by giving us knowledge and info to use and apply !
