Excerpt from Hugo’s Les Miserables (here)
CHAPTER XIII—
We are not obliged to sound the Bishop of D—— on the score of orthodoxy. In the presence of such a soul we feel ourselves in no mood but respect.
__
__
He seated himself on a wooden bench, with his back against a decrepit vine; he gazed at the stars, past the puny and stunted silhouettes of his fruit-trees. This quarter of an acre, so poorly planted, so encumbered with mean buildings and sheds, was dear to him, and satisfied his wants.
What more was needed by this old man, who divided the leisure of his life, where there was so little leisure, between gardening in the daytime and contemplation at night? Was not this narrow enclosure, with the heavens for a ceiling, sufficient to enable him to adore God in his most divine works, in turn? Does not this comprehend all, in fact? and what is there left to desire beyond it? A little garden in which to walk, and immensity in which to dream.
At one’s feet that which can be cultivated and plucked; over head that which one can study and meditate upon: some flowers on earth, and all the stars in the sky.

    1. thanks for the nice comment, Clive!
and the funny thing is that I already planned a folder with photos to chose from for the rest of the month – but then I found the second photo in an old file – and that led to a new idea – and so I guess my goal with the saucer challenge is to “wing it” and not plan too much so I can enjoy it

  1. “…Was not this narrow enclosure, with the heavens for a ceiling, sufficient to enable him to adore God in his most divine works…” precious words and how nature offers everything we need. Only if we are willing to receive it. And what a stunning tree pic!!

    1. Hi D – I do not always recall them – no way – I sometimes search the ebook using a key word – and then I have rabbit trails of reading and then find something that speaks to me that day – and it is a nice way to “snack on” a classic

    1. Hi – I recently had a student say that about Game of Thrones – he was taking to someone that had not seen an episode and he said he wishes he could have that newly experience again

and not sure about you – but the first time I read Les Mis – it was abridged version as a young teen – but it still rocked my world – and has been a top book for a while
and not sure if you recall some of the parts that refer to fabric – as a teen I remember my teacher explaining the Jacquard fabric – and then Cosette’s clothes sometimes mentioned it (thought of you with your seamtress side)
