Micro Fiction and Toilet Paper Weekly Smile

Hello again readers.

Today’s Priorhouse Post has a weekly smile and two entries for Carrot Ranch Flash Fiction.

One thing I will remember from the 2020 pandemic is the toilet paper hoarding.

Also, did you know that a pack of toilet paper we bought last month had half the rolls missing perforations.

You would not think it was a big deal to “not” have perforations, but we realized that it does help to have them. A lot.

No perforations in the rolls of tp. Must have been a rushed batch – meeting the demand for the product.

In the attic, we have this toilet paper holder with am/fm Solid State Radio. Do you think this is from the 1970s? Someone gave it to us as a Christmas White Elephant gift a few years ago (I had the elf shoes for so long that night, but they were swept away from me and the radio  was swapped). In the attic, we also have an ‘N Sync collectible marionette doll – sealed in the original box – waiting for the next white elephant party to unload it – ha.

Part 2:

The Flash Fiction:

The Carrot Ranch challenge (here) for last week was to write a 99-word story about distance dating (any genre, era, or setting). Here is my take:

Title: Pedro is Here

Still don’t understand your commitment to Pedro – he’s 3,000 miles away. You see each other twice a year??

Listen Lisa, you might never understand how I approach love. Just thinking of Pedro is like the feeling of when a tooth stops aching. There’s more to love than physical connecting. We discuss art. Stories. We laugh at lines from shows.

Tolstoy said, “everything is, everything exists, only because I love”- and Pedro can be here without being here.

Okay, I won’t challenge the love you experience – but speaking of toothaches, think I need to see the dentist about this molar.

The Carrot Ranch challenge (here) for this week was to write a 99-word story about longboards. Here is my take:

Title: The Move

Movers came and went.

Packaging tape screeched across boxes.

“Yes, I want them.”

“Mom, you have another box already. One bedroom apartment, remember?”

“Okay. Charity then.”

Rooms emptied.

Piles dissolved.

Later, a mover held up an old skateboard, “Keep or Donate?”

“Keep,” we all exclaimed.

Unwrapping the cover, the wooden longboard was bent – clay wheels cracked.

In the 1950s, when ocean waves were flat, this longboard let grandad screech across land.

“Isn’t that how he scarred his arms?”

“Yup, clay wheels were dangerous.”

The house was completely empty now – but finding grandad’s long-lost longboard filled us immensely.

  1. The partial lock down in Ghana was epic. The rich people were happy and paupers were confused. Food hoarding too brought price hikes.

    1. Thanks for sharing that – I have only seen a few price hikes – and one was at he post office his week and so I actually walked out and went elsewhere – mailed it with UPS for almost half of what hey quoted me – maybe I should post about it later
In the meantime – best wishes in your country and congrats on your new book! I just heard about it and will try and check it out – nice 📚

  2. Nice stories, but I really like the solid state toilet paper holder! And perhaps you need to keep scissors in the bathroom now, just in case the non-perforated thing happens again 😉

  3. Haha – the tp tears pretty easy so no scissors needed (but good idea) and at least half the rolls are like that – but hey – grateful for tp and it really is a good invention – lol
    Good day to you T

  4. Lots to smile about, love what you shared! I too believe 2020 will go down to the toilet paper hoarding year! Lol 😀 (I did not partake in this event, just bought what we needed!) ~Diana 😂

    1. Thanks for the comment – and we did not hoard either – and one time near the end of March I did worry about running out – but hubs found some (and we received a 12 pack as part of an anniversary gift- so that was crazy – like when would toilet paper be sugar valued gift – I was super happy)

  5. Huh! Now you have me wondering at the wonky TP ends on a recent purchase of toilet paper. Instead of the smooth, folded over end stuck to the roll, each one had “flags” hanging beyond where the end might have been folded or trimmed. I never really paid attention to TP construction, but I think it’s gotten sh*tty. 😀 I enjoyed the fun in this post, but I also appreciate the poignancy of your flash about how something with memories can fill us up.

    1. Oh Charli – thanks for extracting stuff from my fiction- that always feels so good.
And love your play on words – hahaha
The shi**y quality of some tp has to be related to the pandemic –

Have a great week and see you next week for another round

  6. Yes, perforations are a BIG help in TP. You’ll have to keep scissors by the toilet. 🙂 I’ve seen and enjoyed these memes and more about the great TP crisis of 2020…a crisis that didn’t need to exist. I’ll remember that, changing our moving date and moving just into the pandemic as well as not haven’t the birthday celebration with my praise team friends that was planned (although I did get to enjoy the company of two sets of very good friend), and all the confusing news flying about. Hard to discern what’s true and what’s exaggerated and I’m disgusted with all political parties at the partisanship at a time when we should be united. Nothing new there, though.

    Stay well.

    1. Thanks Janet – you did a great summary of key takeaways!
      Awesome
And I kind of eel like I lived with you.
Funny how we share virtual lives and I came back to blog right when you were unpacking and got to see the tea cup turned soap holder.
I look forward to following your AZ life.
      Good day
And God please help our country – with the unity angle and with politics

  7. No perforations in toilet paper. Oh no!
Two wonderful flashes. I’d read and enjoyed the second one at the Ranch. So much emotion through sharing happy memories. And Pedro and the meaning of love is also heartwarming. Well done, Yvette.

    1. thanks so much Norah – appreciate the feedback on the fiction
and with the tp – funny how we adapt and get used to things – I am now used to “ripping” it apart – hah

      1. I think the perforations were invented during my life – we used newspaper when I was a kid – no perforations there. 🙂

  8. I always buy a lot of pantry items, which includes paper products, so I don’t have to go shopping in the Winter except for perishable items and we had such nice Winter weather that I picked up new perishables on a regular basis and didn’t go into my stash. Every time I went to the store (once a month) I picked up more paper products – I am good for TP. For me, things did not change a lot since I already worked from home, live alone, and am not really a social butterfly anyway. All my friends live out of state, with the exception of one so no one is running in/out of my house either. I guess I will remember the closure of Council Point Park as that is a place where I derive joy and write about and take photographs there is off limits for now. I go there to clear my mind and there is plenty to think of right now in this health crisis.

    1. Hi Linda – that is a good thing that it did not disrupt your life – some people are completely flipped over. Also glad you have your supplies 🙂 ttys

      1. Yes, I lucked out – just affected as to the Park and we slowed down at work. Hopefully I am not laid off – he had insinuated it might happen the end of April but put it off one month.

  9. For me the TP will definitely make THE memory of 2020 – since it took us 1 1/2 week to find a store that had it, and when we did, it was a pack of 45 rolls! And yes we did have scissors in the bathroom, since I couldn’t wait with going to the restroom for 1 1/2 week, so when I saw two lonely packages of paper towel on a store shelf, I immediately confiscated one. Hubs protested, “But its not TP!” I told him, “it will do the trick for me,” and cut them in half size.

    1. Hahaha – thanks so much for joining in! The 45 pack – well that helps if they limit one purchase only.
And one day I walked into a small local store (six feet apart) and they had 4-packs of tp left and I grabbed one (just one) and my unsnarl raffled it off with his online group – super fun.
Anyhow – clever idea with the paper towels – I just worry about flushing anything other than tp –
And the good news is I do have alternative paper products to use if it came down to that – –
I have a multi pack of purse size travel Kleenex – and in March we went to IKEA and my aunt loves their jumbo square napkins and so I had two 500 packs of those – and we did have paper towels – so it never came to forks more here – it Jesh…. it so crazy that for a while there there was such a shortage and I di d kind of worry. Makes me super grateful for the basics I guess —
Thanks again for chiming in 😉

  10. I will remember the isolation and how I miss social gathering with friends and family. I will also remember that every day felt like groundhog day (from the Movie).
