I have some food photos to use up from earlier this fall:

Did not care for it – but it was worth trying.

And remember – greens and quality meats can help you maintain a healthy bio-terrain.
Was just reading AGAIN about how it is the body’s immune system that heals a person – it is not a doctor- not the drug – etc.; instead, your immune system is what heals you and there are things to help – so you want to do things “that bring your body back to balance so the body can heal itself.”
This means saying “no” to sugars, which arrest the immune system, and saying “yes” to veggies and quality meats (in my very humble opinion).
Here are some other greens enjoyed this fall.
Did you notice the note about green chilis at 6lbs for $1.00? This vendor had to get rid of a truckload – and so we left with a box of and then had to give a lot away.

I can’t imagine not washing my greens! Unless they came from the grocery store in a bag that said pre-washed. I love buying greens here in the South at our local grocery or fruit stand, but those have to be waged, as they are straight from the garden. My favorites are mustard greens. My second favorite are turnip greens. I also love store bought spinach, pre-washed in the bag to make salads. 😋

I have to go for the green chillies and bacon, although that little plate would be just an appetizer for a person like me that likes to a lot. Good combination that plate. The pizza…..where the is the one with a lot of cheese and bacon the better. I’m salivating now thinking about it and is only 10 a.m here.

I know people who say the same thing about not washing greens or any produce for that matter. Not me! I’ve come across far too many insects and always rinse everything. If it’s one thing that can ruin my meal, it’s seeking a tiny bug crawling on my salad. Great pics!

I agree – seeing something crawl would be creepy!! And I prefer to soak my greens in water and this summer I soaked a handful of basil and there was an egg sac of some sort and bugs! So I think cold water soak is not like we are saying use soap and bleach – just get rid of rocks and misc so we can get the goods !!

I don’t remember ever having star fruit. Sounds yummy. Nope — I’m a greens rinser. I may just pull it from the pack when it says pre-washed three times! LOL. I love pizza but use it sparingly! I have yet to try cauliflower crust. I hate to admit that I love bacon and your bacon jokes made me laugh! Have a wonderful weekend!

Glad to share a laugh with you with the bacon comics – and we started using bacon grease a lot more this year – is so good for certain things
And I have seen the triple washed and I also do eat and go with those – but I prefer to soak greens in big bowl of water for a short while

Take what i need on the bacon poster – YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING! There wouldn’t be anything left for anyone else! Love all the food here – except the hot pepper – the old stomach just wouldn’t like that.

Hi G! Those green chilies were weird because they started out too mild – and then as weeks went by they got hotter – I could not even eat the last two times they were cooked – way too spicy hot – so I hear ya on that part!

My mother loved star fruit. I like it, too– and how charming to have it as your first date memory!
I wash our greens because *eww* and because eating grit is icky in my teeth.
Interesting observation that our immune systems heal us, not the doc’s care per se. That’s good to remember when thinking about what to eat and why.

Your word “ewwww” was exactly how I felt with dinner – and not quite sure my stomach acid was super strong (like my husband’s stomach is super strength stomach acid)
So I think if someone is still rebuilding terrain and stomach acid they need to be extra careful

Great post, love bacon, 😁 And must always wash greens, no matter where they come from. In this day and age, there are always contaminants in the air, no matter how the produce is grown, and these can simply be rinsed off!

I’ve been curious about cauliflower crust pizza, but never had the nerve to try it.
Always rinse greens. The grit is bad for your teeth, and even organic food can be picked over by dirty hands.

That is a good point about the hands that did the harvesting!
And not everyone has the same stomach acid to break down all pathogens and so I guess my take is when cooking for a small group – err on the side of caution even if an informal dinner –
And before we write it off completely – we are going to try a few different versions of cauliflower-crust pizza…

I definitely rinse off all greens before eating them. Even if they are “organic”, they still could have pathogens from manure used for fertilizer and if they are not organic, they may have herbicide and/or pesticide residue. I am now hungry after reading this post! 🙂

I grow a lot of our greens, so it’s second nature to wash them. I definitely wash purchased veg and fruits — all of them.
Not a fan of bacon; though I have made it (nitrite-free) and that tastes ok. Meat for me is like garnish on my mainly vegetarian meals.

All looks so good, thankfully, I have lunch in 20 minutes.
I’ve never tried star fruit, I don’t think I have even seen it at the stores here.
I think any greens have to be washed because of tiny organisms like bacteria and tiny deposits from wild animals, insects, etc, etc. That’s when you bring t in from the garden.
I sort of do not like greens which are in plastic boxes because they cannot breath quite frequently. Boxes with openings are fine. Store greens can have some undesirable bacteria on them which grew after they were washed and packed. I think running water is good always, it is extra work and drying, but still worth it.
I’m glad for you you got the big box of greens and were able to give even away some. Our prices for organic greens are quite high here, and usually every bunch of every sort of green is sold separately.
I loved the pictures and I always love bacon. Pizza not that much, unless I make my own from scratch which is maybe twice a year.
Anyway, if I were invited to this lunch/dinner or whatever, I’d eat everything. It looks extremely delicious. I think when I don’t have to cook, everything tastes twice as great.

Thanks for the detailed comment, Inese! And was just thinking about you mentioning you wanted to make homemade bread… and a homemade crust would be ideal for a good pizza.
Also / I have heard about the plastic containers or bags as being not ideal for storing produce ((and side note – was listening to a Mark Hyman podcast and found out the some teabags use plastic now – omg! So for those that use bagged tea- the expensive pyramid shaped ones might have slight contaminates from the plastic sieve – so no mas of that))
And when I prefer to soak produce bs the running water – and in the summer – brought in a handful of basil and soaked it for about five minutes – and a whole egg sac surfaced and a few bugs – I know some cultures eat lots of bugs – but not my thing right now – ha!

I don’t know if I ever will have enough time for bread, but I make recently lots of apple pies. Delicious and very inexpensive, take about 20 minutes to make. We used kefir for raising dough in Latvia for quick pies or similar bakes. This kefir isn’t that good (they add all kinds of things), but still does the job. Glas of kefir, good tea spoon of baking soda, 2 glasses of flour, 3 eggs, some sugar, lots of cinnamon and as many apples as you have time for to peel and slice. It’s ready in no time. 385 F for some 35-40 minutes.The other type is 5 apples + cinnamon + 5 flat table spoons of sugar + 5 eggs+ 5 flat table spoons of flour. Yolks + sugar and egg whites are whipped separately, then we put together yolks and whites and lightly stir in that little bit of flour and that’s it. It goes into round cake pan, apples first, the rest on top and let it go for some 35 minutes. I use for these 356F.
I think you love cooking. If you like whipping cream like I do, you can top these pies with whipped cream. Almost no sugar should be added.

I’ve never tried starfruit before Yvette and think I’d not be keen on the cauliflower pizza even if from Wegman’s. We don’t have a Wegman’s here in Michigan, but my NY friend raves about it all the time and they opened up one in near my NC friend and she has begun to sing its praises. I could not eat unwashed greens either – even organic ones. Not in an age of recalls and listeria and other illnesses stemming from before the greens are harvested. Love the ham/bacon funny and Canadian bacon is “peameal” bacon and does resemble thin-sliced ham but has a layer of cornmeal on the top with a thin layer of fat which is tasty when cooked up. We missed peameal bacon when moving to the U.S.

Thanks for the explanation of pea meal bacon! Sounds tasty! And wegmans is a great store (as a child I went to one of their first stores in western New York – triple off coupons and my mom gave us a few dollars to get what we wanted) and I am glad they made it to our town- but not only was this pizza terrible –
Aftercare and it took forever – the employee was annoyed! We let it go – but it reminded me of a European worker -no offense meant with that – but she was bland / no personality – and seemed like she had been with the company forty years and was so “not excited” about discussing or making anyone’s pizza order! We totally let it go – I mean – hey – just in a line at this pizza window – and meeting up with son and his gf- so not a big deal.
And we also knew wegmans would have replaced our “not tasting good cauliflower crust” pizza (they rock at CS) but we were happy with how all things turned out – no need for anything else!
And thanks for chiming in about the greens washing – you added more reasons why we need to do it- even if organic

Sometime if you get a chance, try that pea meal bacon. It is such a thin “crust” (maybe 1/4 of an inch, yellow from the cornmeal. Don’t let the fat scare you off, it is a very thin strip and gives it taste. The stores are always confusing the two. My friend shares her Wegman’s posts on her wall so her Facebook friends see an amazing array of desserts, produce, ready-made dinners. You were nice not to make a big deal out of it – next time you will stick with a more conventional pizza, but how did you know? I know they say the bagged salads have been triple washed but I’d still have angst eating them right from the bag. 🙂

I have been reading about our immune system can be boost and get rid of myriad diseases. I think scientists are finding ways to boost our immune system to target certain or particular illnesses with decent success. Of course, it can backfire and attack one’s own body too ( e.g. arthritis). Please take care and have a great weekend!

Thanks YC – and hope your reading is going well! And I think microbes or small microscopic worms are at the root cause of these so called autoimmune disorders – and in some cases the body is attacking diseased tissue from the pathogens infested there. And like with arthritis – the inflammation with it has a reason – and what frustrates me is that folks who have that – or who have CFS or fibro – are still eating sugar! Um – no – cannot have cookies and cake and carbs and think a systemic issue will heal! And was reading in the whole 30 book about how people will fight and argue to eat grains – ignoring the possible havoc grains can have on the intestines- making it more permeable and upset!
I also followed a study – years ago – about a researcher who studies the brains of deceased patients with MS. And in every brain he inspected there was a microscopic worm present – so we know MS has a bacterial component that leads to myelin sheath breakdown – but likely this micro work plays a role!
And so your reading on the immune system is interesting to me too – because it is all about getting that healthy terrain – and the body system gets out of whack in these first world countries that kill all the good microbes in our gut! Leaving us vulnerable and too sterile!
And then add the lie of fat free and meat free and people become malnourished and then heavy leaky gut… no wonder they feel like shit and no wonder they feel tired all the time.
Sorry to rant – but may we all read and learn more about helping immune system Function better so we can live a life not plagued with tiredness – drugs – and declining health….

Yes, I understand how you feel about people’s eating or living life style that may not be good for them unknowingly or knowingly. Sometimes, I ponder that we do not give loving and kindness to our body, as we treat other things. Perhaps, not even aware of its presence until illness occurs. I am not blaming people for this habit which I am also included. I think we should all help raising awareness.
For our immune system, I think it is a miracle soldier in our body. Many researches now are focusing on finding ways to boost it to help treat many serious illnesses that medicines alone can’t do. The system can pin point target things that should not belong and take care of them than drugs.

Starfruit! I love it, but so long I don’t taste one! When I was little we had lots of it, so many that my mommy made some kind of jam, she cooked them with a little bit of water, clover and sugar, but they still had the star shape. My mouth is watering!

I wash greens, even the ones I grew myself without pesticide. Can’t even bring a peony in without ants and I never eat the peonies, lol, of course I rinse the greens!

I cannot remember anymore the taste of starfruit as unfortunately, it is not many around anymore whenever I go to my birth Country for a visit. Some of the fruits I grew up with are either being exported or somehow gone! 😦

Starfruit is so beautiful as a flower and a fruit. It grows so well here. It is sweet that you and your husband shared starfruit on one of your dates. I like it a lot. Cauliflower crust is one of those things that I would like to like, but it is usually so thin. I really do believe in thoroughly washing the dirt off of produce especially here since they have the rat lung parasite that is present on the island. If I wasn’t here I might be a little more lax around organic produce. I loved all of your bacon pictures of course.
Lately we have been doing a great job of eating more fruits and veggies also some meat, but I think I need to pay a little closer attention to make sure that I am getting enough of the necessary nutrients I need since I have been working out hard. I still need to completely nix the refined sugar. It still makes appearances in my coffee and every now and then we get honey macadamia nuts. I think that will be my mission for the new year because I know that the benefits of letting go of poisonous sugar could only help me be healthy and free.

and I heard about the rat lung parasite – saw it on a few shows and once watched the documentary about the teenager who brought in beets from his garden and made a live drink with them and got a brain parasite – think from a slug or snail – need to look it up – but Alana that Hawaiian teen story was in my mind with the produce! And so I am extra glad you mentioned this – I did not know it was still going on over there – just found this from May 2019 – and want to add it here t share with folks in the future – (feel like we should always rinse or soak produce – it is not being super healthy-cool to not do so!!)

It is good to spread awareness so that people care for their food carefully. It just goes to show that there are different precautions that should be taken depending on what region we live in.

Agree with you and AJ – so many folks are brainwashed to see meat as the bad guy- and their health suffers –
Red meat is bad to some people but then they woof down muffins with bad oils – eat cookies and cake and granola bars with all that sugar and grains – hurting the immune system
