Thursday Doors & Buffalo, NY (Quote Challenge Day 2 – John Roberts)

Hello Readers.

For Thursday Doors this week, I have a door from Buffalo, NY. This was taken last February and the handle kept coming off the door. You could maneuver it back on, but I think you had to have someone on the outside help. It was pretty funny and I guess it had been broke for a while.

In the door photo is Dawn, an old friend that I was thankful to see while in Buffalo that month. And so as October winds down, I wanted to share a throwback photo of our Halloween costumes back in 1987. Dawn and I were a pair of dice. This is the same friend that while with our boyfriends, in 1987, we used to insert “who” for “what” in U2’s song “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For…” (ha…)

We were in Buffalo, NY for a funeral the last night of our trip everyone was at this local bar, because Buffalo has lots of small corner bars – part of the culture in some parts.  So we had to stop by – to see family and friends.  I am so glad we did stop by for a little while – even though there was grief heaviness. I also took this next photo of a few folks doing shots of whiskey in honor/remembrance of the deceased.

I had my camera out for something else and took this real quick like. So glad to have captured this moment.

I know everyone has their own opinion about alcohol, especially with its misuse and abuse, but if ever there was a good reason to do a community shot — an honorary toast to the deceased is one of them.  (And maybe for a filovirus -kidding – remember Joe’s Shoes?)

Also, side note – did you know that I have about five episodes of the Sopranos waiting for me to finish? I am slowly pacing myself and once I finish a certain goal – I will finish off the series. I know some folks would not be able to wait, but it is a little reward for me. This next photo is from the last episode I watched and it shows that they also had the tradition of a community remembrance shot.

To close this Throwback Thursday Door post, I want to add in Day #2 of Karen’s quote challenge.

My quote is from John Roberts, chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court  – who also happens to be from Buffalo, NY. Roberts is an amazing man – brilliant – balanced – polished – and kind. (And did I mention he was from Buffalo?)

    You’re asking for trouble – I always get quotes wrong.
    Roberts is one of the more likable justices in my opinion:)

    1. well they don’t always happen to me – and actually – I did not even walk into that restroom. We were there less than an hour – laughed a whole bunch and hugged folks even more. When folks were laughing about the door – I had to go over and see – and the rest unfolded..
      and Roberts is a very wise man and putting the Buffalo part aside – Roberts is an example of a qualified man in the right position…

  3. This made me chuckle as I was drinking my morning cup of tea! I love the dice costumes – are you wearing them for a Halloween again this year! And I’m afraid I don’t know where Buffalo is, or what happened there, so i’m off to do some research……..
    And by the way I love your door story!

    1. Hi – I have not been a “die” since that time. 🙂
      And quick scoop on Buffalo NY – it is in the Northeast United States and in the mid to late 1800s the city had a boom because of its strategic location on Lake Erie – and being near Niagara Falls – the growth continued for years and some Hollywood movies helped make it a romantic area linking it to the Falls – something like that – and today – the outskirts have miles of closed steel mills (part of our “rust belt”) -Buffalo has a rich past that is currently overlooked (like when the show Aerial America rudely skipped Buffalo while covering New York State). Buffalo was the home of two presidents, Millard Fillmore and Grover Cleveland, and President McKinley was shot while speaking there in 1901 – I lived off McKinley Parkway for part of my childhood.

        1. Well actually no – I guess the name came from a foreign word buvlava (?) for beautiful river because the lakes there (lake Erie and Lake Ontario are eight there for enjoying) there are no buffalo there that I have seen – but in Colorado there were plenty in certain mountainous areas

          And if you ever did visit the buffalo area – you would like it in summer cos they have boating – wineries – and good food

  4. Love the throwback Halloween photo. We lived in Lockport NY for about 2 years in the 80’s, my son was born there.We had 2 very mild winters, but I was prepared for the worst.

    1. Glad you had those mild winters — because actually Syracuse and Lockport can get more snow than Buffalo does – at times…
      but you could still never exist in a van by Lake Erie because of the winter lake effect – lol

    I like the broken handle bit. I recall one time meeting in a funky old coffee house for an army thing, and my husband got trapped in the bathroom when the knob fell off. Upon trying to open it from the outside, the other doorknob came off, too! One of the guys had to unscrew the doorknob to get him out! The next time we went, they had a shiny new doorknob, which stood out somethin awful, but at least it was safe! 🙂

      I think here someone is in denial and maybe fixes it short term only.
      and you know – imagining your husband stuck in there – I wonder if he was mad… or is he a chill kind of guy

  6. I have encountered several broken doorknobs in my life, and I’m always amazed at how long people put up with them. Some of them become a thing, and they just stay broken. I love corner bars, and drinking a shot in honor of a friend is not a bad practice. If you don’t drink alcohol, you can still raise a glass.

Well said – you can still raise the glass – or even do your shot later – and in this case – we had to skip the shots – but I did have a beer earlier – but had to really watch what I put in my body because of the exhaustion from the week and also we needed to eat still… had only been picking – and no base coat – well um….
      anyhow, corner bars are not everywhere – and especially not that we have found in RVA – and so Bdubs (Buffalo Wild Wings is usually the place we take folks who come and want that… not the same – but works)

  7. Broken door knobs have trapped me in rooms on a number of occasions over the years. Like Dan said, I don’t understand why they can stay broken for so long before some folks get fed-up and fix them.
    My condolences for your loss.

  8. I was in Buffalo late December 1985. I barely escaped with my life. I dint the most stupid and dangerous thing I have ever done, quite unwittingly though. I walked into the Flamingo Bar wearing my Miami Dolphins jersey.

    1. Well I think I already knew that from another time we shared comments about buffalo dear Carl — it was a while back – and the question is do u have a comic about it? If not – um – maybe some drawing ? Lol

    1. ☺️ well Roberts actually has a few quotes about autoimmune diseases but I am sick of talking about pathology, liver health, nutrition, etc. right now – so thanks for the comment

Well still learning so much – but two of the best things I’ve learned about thyroid function is that 1) imbalances are often the sign of a long time stressed immune system (Resulting in hair loss at times – but that ties into liver/pancreas support and John B of logos has some of the best explanation for Thyroid issues) and 2) coincidentally speaking of buffalo ny – for a couple decades now I have always wondered why so many females from western New York area had thyroid problems – now it is always tough to pinpoint exact causes – but I think there is an association of thyroid problems with a small flat worm called a fluke. There are certain fluids that have been found in the Great Lakes – sometimes they get on skin and slowly burrow in (a shower after swimming can help) or someone might invest them and then they hang out for a while and later cause problems – it depends on the internal condition of a person – ya know ? And not to ramble – but some folks believe things can hang out in a body (dormant) and then years later cos probs – this happens with giardia – they can hang out and hide in the small bile ducts – anyhow – I used to wonder if buffalo women had thyroid issues because of Niagara falls industry – but when I read the info about certain flukes in the Great Lakes – and then different info about flukes and some of the ways they impact a body …
          ok – I will see if I can find what John B wrote about the thyroid – you might enjoy it

  11. Interesting pictures, one of them is also matching the upcoming Halloween.. It is funny you insert “who” for “what”.. Based on your description, you already did not need “who” for “what” 🙂

  13. Yeah, I can see that a doorknob like that could be a problem. 🙂 I had a similar Halloween costume “back in the day” once, but I went as a package, not a die. It looked good, but it was hard to maneuver around that party! I like Justice Roberts, too. We’re looking forward to watching season 2 of “Stranger Things” on Netflix, although we may wait until Thanksgiving to watch with my s-I-l. Such willpower!!

Hi Janet – the package sounds like a fun costume and I bet it would be difficult to maneuver – I can’t recall if ours were cumbersome but I imagine they were – and that does take will power but it could be so fun! Kind of a trendy thing right now is to watch seasons of shows together – who would have imagined the options – back in the 80s nothing like this for sure

Never heard of that and never saw stranger things – but both sound good – will check out – I just enjoyed a few episodes of “hunted” (2012) and it was great filming – decent acting and plot – but a few things annoying – like the lead character physically beat the crap out of too many strong guys – and even with some GIJane training – that is just not realistic – but it was a reminder as to what great directing and filming can Bring to a show

  14. raising a glass or doing a shot for someone who is gone seems quite fitting. Our old house has old doorknobs, that screw in from each side, one unscrewed while I was in my den and I had to break a pane of glass to get my hand to the other side to open it. Loved the photos you and your friend as dice, and the reference to the lyric change 🙂

    1. Thanks for reading ! And I still think of that old house your family used to own that the kardashians ought!
      And wow about breaking the window pane – but can see it was necessary.
      Oh and besides the raising the glass – have u ever heard of dumping out beer on the ground to honor the deceased?
