Shadows in New York City

I am combining challenges, so as we walk with Restless Jo – let us also explore some shadows around the Big Apple, which is linked to the Daily Post for shadowed.

Did you notice the parking levels in the lower left photo? – Well parking in new york is “layered” and it is fascinating to watch the cars get stacked or moved on a  revolving lift.

Here is what central park looks like – as you look down – from the Top of the Rock (linked to travel with intent).

Walking in New York City has many places to stop and play – so after walking in the park – we got back on 5th Avenue to visit the basement level Apple Store. And  joy is making silly faces on iPhones…so this is linked to Kan’s challenge week 24.

        5. ha! – well I am horrible with “names:” sometimes – and so while I am really good with faces and remembering what people say – if I do not store that name properly – well – argh!!! and scary you say? nah – it just means that I listen – and well, I can also sense when people are bullshi**ers (excuse the french on that) and well I just prefer honesty and when folks shoot straight – and as Judge Judy always says – when we keep it real and stay honest, we never have to “remember” what we said – we can just be in peace 🙂

    1. well dear swossie-Q – put this city on your bucket list. And I do not say that lightly – and actually there is no other place I suggest to add to a bucket list – but NYC is a must “feel” at least once…. I never went in the 80’s cos it was considered unsafe for a while – and in the 90’s I never thought of it either – I turned down a few trips to go there with friends – even one where my sis and her friends stayed at the waldorf – but then we went one day and oh my goodness…. amazing vibe….

  9. Sigh….loved your view of NYC. I’ve only been there once and spent my “tourist time” at Ground Zero. Needless to say, it kind of flavored the rest of my time there and I didn’t really get to see anything else. Gorgeous!
    And, speaking of gorgeous…is that you and your family in the top right??
    Now, I’m going to check out some of the photo challenges you noted. I haven’t posted any photos in a while and need some inspiration.

Hey momma joy – I can see why you sent your time at ground zero – and I think some of the touristy things are a must – like the entire day we spent seeing the statue of liberty/ellis island “had” to be done, but I am good if I never do it again. also – have you seen this little structure that was made using some of the plane wreckage from 911:

    1. oh how fun – and we have not done it for a few years, but if you check online ahead of time they have some great deals on broadway packages that include dinner and a show – for off broadway selections sometimes too.

  13. Great one! I love NYC at the holidays! When they stack the cars they are very rough with them. I have numerous dent and scratches from these lots but it is a marvelous concept! Perfect post.

    1. Oh yes- yes yes – thanks for noting that – and we have not handed over the keys very often – and the times we have things have been fine – but you are right — all valets can pose risk but especially some of those high rise factory storage ones… whew

        1. yeah – and we actually started parking outside the main areas – and then subway on in to where we need to be. Gives us more sightseeing. Not always doable – but sometimes it is…

    1. thanks so much Amy – and that was such a quick and random shot – one day I’d like to go back and take some serious photos – of certain places – but more of the people – like the sketch artists that set up not he curb and do portraits for 5 to 20 dollars (they negotiate the price with you – it’s fun)- and I also want to capture some musicians – maybe this summer – cos it is only 6 hours from where we live – but better than that is that it a super easy drive — all flat and straight up I-95….

        1. well when you go back again I think it will be interesting to see what you find with your lens. I know photographers change just like other artists do… and speaking of that – one year we watched an artist painting in times square. She had this huge easel – a couple hundred dollars worth of oils – and a medium size canvas and was doing an abstract of the buildings – I would do anything to go back and record her in action – but at the time I was just looking – was not thinking of any pics… well maybe a couple pics – but you know… 🙂

          I know I have learned much from bloggers. Also, photo devices, lens, and software have been improved so much.

        3. Amy – I did not even get one picture! argh! In fact, on that trip I barely took dozen shots – which I know is good because sometimes we just have to “live it” and experience it – and sometimes I take no photos just for that reason (well I might sneak one or two in) but one trip that I also did not get a pic of was this interactive singing guy who entertained everyone in a long line – he was soliciting money – but whew – he was good – and he would ask ya where you are from – sing about your town and just a brilliant street guy… but not a single shot… oh well..
          and I agree with you about improvements – and crazy to think that folks are walking around with Google glass now – my hubs said that is what I need – just click click click – lol – but nahhhhhh

        5. I KNOW!!! and I did hear the glass is not as successful as they had hoped –
          here is a snippet:

          In the video, host John Pozadzides explains that “this is the first time” Geek Beat has ever dedicated an entire episode to “telling people not to buy a product” simply because he thinks “it would be a terrible mistake for the vast majority of you to buy one.” Pozadzides goes on to say that his disappointment with Glass “was nearly instantaneous” the minute he started wearing the headset, which was especially unfortunate for him because he’d just sent Google more than $1,700 of his own money to acquire the prescription version of the device.

          What was so disappointing to him about Glass? Just about everything. He found that the eyepiece used for the computer was too heavy to make the glasses comfortable and he was always worried that they’d fall off his face if he looked downward. Glass’s battery life is “nothing less than abysmal” and “won’t last more than a few hours at most,” and that’s if you’re not using it to actually do anything such as take pictures or shoot video. Glass is also deemed “crash-tastic” as there were many times he tried to shoot a video and “Glass didn’t respond to anything.”

          And it gets even better: Pozadzides notes that the way Glass is designed, you can only adjust the screen and camera horizontally, not vertically.

        3. well I once had a map of all the sculptures you could go and see in the park – we never did it tho –
          from Google maps: “7 miles / 2.9 miles up fifth ave (59th to 110th) .6 miles across the top of the park on 110th 2.9 miles down central park west to 59th and .6 miles back to fifth ave. It is relatively flat with lots of distractions”
          also – with celebrity sighting there – well you are never really “sure” because in person they often look very different – or they are just look-a-likes – ha!

        4. Sounds like that would be a great project to start with, but that’s lots of work as well. 😀 It’s really huge and one day I would love to go for a quick visit for sure. I just hope it will be quiet. 😆

    1. yes, in some ways I would say it is different – but in other ways it is likely very similar – but in the late 80’s – we knew a girl who was there and had her purse robbed – and then there was the subway shootings – and so it was always like, “new York – nahhh – think I’ll pass” just like I never wanted to go to “Atlantic City” – but now NYC is a place I could visit monthly (but can;t overdo it either – ha!)

      1. Our first impression of NY was on our first day when we got on a bus and the driver said we had to get off because we didn’t have the right change for the fare. Then a lovely young lady passed the money to us for the fare and smiled at us. It made our day. Every where we went we found friendly people. Have lots of really good memories of our time in USA

  22. I’ve been to NYC one time in 2010 and it was overwhelming for a country girl. Now, at least, I can say I have done it. ha ha. It’s fun to see your perspective and your photos. What a good idea to combine several challenges into one post.

    1. thanks – and it is a very grainy and was taken with a motorola phone camera (one of my favorite flip phones back in the day- and so cool at the time)
      and we have a few better pics from that weekend trip – but that was the one I grabbed for the collage — just a quick thought, ya know? anyhow, have a great rest of your weekend 🙂

This post was really awesome. Shadows, in NYC? I am one of those individuals in the dark, who have never heard of the parking system you are talking about in your blog.       and next time I go I will get video footage of the bigger parking systems. we never really saw it because if you get parking with the hotel they just take you r car to one of their garages “somewhere” – but one day we were walking around and walked into a garage – and there are elevators for cars and the rows are automated – and cars go up and down and then get stacked in a slot – and we were just fascinated. so I will get some footage – we are hoping to make a one night trip next month….

      no plane – it was just from the “top of the rock” observation deck ( 30 rockefeller plaza – HERE) – which might be the very bets place to get to in order to beta sky view. If you look at the lithe photo to the right you can see my spouse and husband crouched in the shadow – it was cold when we took pics that day… brrrrrr 🙂

  36. Holy smokes Yvette, did you ever generate some interest with this one! Any you DEFINITELY get the “most challenge links” award as well 😊. We are lucky that our kids live in Tribeca so we get to NYC many times in a given year. The parking is clever, yes, but outrageously expensive. More than an apartment in many cities. Definitely don’t want to drive in the city if you don’t have to. And the subways are such a great way to get around in the winter when the city streets are so windy and cold. I felt so bad for the tourists up there over the holidays. It was cold and drizzly rain all week – the ONLY time you’d rather see snow!!! And finally, YES, the NYC Apple store is a tourist attraction in and of itself! I hit it every time I’m in town just to play with the latest toys and pick the best of the brains! Happy New Year to you.

    1. oh tina p- thx and yeah – I saw that you were in NY over the holidays!!! sorry the weather was so cold – and with parking – well it helps if the hotel includes parking – and some off season visiting helps (and reading your comment made me miss NYC even more – and we are going to try and sneak away – planning it now – we were supposed to go in spetember but it feel thru – but that’s okay…)

  37. I live in upstate New York – a whole different planet! I was scared of the city until this past September, when a friend and I traveled there to meet another friend – and, with two tour guides who knew Manhattan a lot better than I do, I felt almost at home in the big, big Apple.

    I’m looking forward to going again, and seeing some of these sights for myself! Great, artful post!

Shan – we are similar in how I am also from westerner new york and stayed away from there – but when I did go – well I like how you worded it – “felt a little at home” – which is crazy cos it is packed and hustling – and the funny thing is that new York city is closer to my house now than it was when I lived in New York State – and it is a much easier drive – go figure! thx for dropping by…

  38. Love this post – great pictures! Love the family ones especially. You all look great! That’s the same loop we tend to stick to in Central Park. Next time, I vow to start higher up and get to the museum. We’ve still only seen a tiny section of the entire park, though it’s always enjoyable. I didn’t know that about stacking cars. My goodness it’s a crowded city. Hope you had a fun trip!
