wpc- achievement (race day shirt, Titian art)

The weekly photo challenge is “achievement” this week, and Michelle W.’s colorful photo of NYC runners reminded me of a small run I did in 2002.  I am not a major runner, but I have been doing 5K’s on and off since the 80’s. And back in 2002, I was new to town and I just quickly signed up for the 4 mile Los Gatos Great Race.

great race 2002This little ol’ run turned out to be a celebrated achievement for me because not only was it a very hilly in the mountains up and down kinda run, but I also decided to take the boys along – a 2 1/2 and 4 year old –  in a double stroller!   Oh, and before the race even started – I had to walk UP many hills just to check-in…..

When I crossed the finish line that morning, with wonderful strangers cheering us on, well I knew I would NEVER run with large kids in double stroller – ever again.

The Great Race was still really fun – and I kept the t-shirt as a momento.

Part 2 – Titian art.

I wanted to include some Titian art for the second part of this achievement post because what I found inspiring about Titian was that he had some of his BEST years AFTER the age of 60.

Here is a quick slide show I made with a handful of Titian’s paintings, synced to “Times Like These” by the Foo Fighters, which was recorded in spring of 2002, which was right around the time of the race:

Jay Williams writes, “Titian, in the last 10 or 12 years of his life and secure in his renown, painted as much to please himself as to satisfy patrons. Still a vigorous personality even in his eighties, he expressed passionate feelings in his works – in an age that still tended to regard a painting as a piece of find craftsmanship rather than an outlet for personal emotions. Titian covered his late canvases with quick, broad brushstrokes, using shimmering color and a vigorous sense of drama.”

I think Titian’s later year achievements can inspire all of us – because while so many of us have small and large successes already, well – let us not forget that there is still opportunity to do some great things.

There is still time to pursue an old dream or come up with a new one.

I say this very seriously because I have seen many people feel washed up and “done” at 55.  I have seen people filled with regret and only backward thinking in their 40’s. And sure, I know there are sometimes different issues to work through  –  healing, disappointment, etc.  – but some fresh years are in front of you – and with all your life seasoning and the specialness that only “you” can contribute  – well the coming years are waiting to be embraced!

When Titian painted this self-portrait – he was in his 60’s and he had already achieved so much – but he still had almost 20 more years of creative working after this…

    1. thanks so much Indah – and well thanks for saying that it “fit” but I have to admit it fell in my lap – I wanted to do something with Titian, and while I do not love all of his work – the book I read opened with that quote and photo and well, this just fell in my lap… hope you have a great rest of your day

  2. That reminded me… a very long time ago, when I was 18 a friend and I took a trip to Venice, where a Titian exhibition happened to be on in the Doge Palace. We went, of course. It was amazing 🙂

  3. Yvette as you know I can relate more to the achievement as it relates to your run, with a stroller no less, than the art. Having said that I love the music that you chose for the video and I am enjoying being exposed to your knowledge of art. 🙂

  4. I like your choices. Congratulations to you and thanks for highlighting Titian. Hurrah for those of us doing things after 60 (although I’m only 60 this year.)

    1. yes, gifted, but also a bit materialistic and some say he knew how to “milk” the system because he was stipened by the council – and well, he sometimes had assistants finish pieces – which was common practice back then, but gifted – yeah, that he was… 🙂

  6. What an inspiring post. I remember pushing one, young, small child in a stroller. I can’t imagine running and pushing two. I did ride my bike with my older daughter in a seat on the back, but that’s not quite the same as pushing. Thanks for mentioning my blog Yvette. I understand your comment now. You set the bar pretty high for accomplishments after 60, but I am very happy to be able to make the attempt. Thanks for the encouragement.

    1. good morning Dan – and well, the timing of your 60th bdya post just seemed so cool :)- and I like how you summed up decades — flowed. and my husband had the bike carriage thing for his daughter – which was kind of cool because it was the in the mid 90’s and that little carriage was so week made. okay – happy birthday (old man) ha! and have a great day!

  7. Congrats on your race, Yvette! Durned hills and all 🙂 I hope to start running again after the first of the year once my knee is all healed up.
    I also really loved the art history lesson. I’m woefully ignorant in that regard although I love looking at it. These are some of my favorites–I must really like that era and was so happy to learn more today.
    Have a great day, my friend!!!

    1. Hi Mamma-joy – hello amiga – long time no hear!
      and actually with the Titian art – well I was biased in my selections here – and I know that is okay – but in this bias I really do NOT accurately represent this talent – because I left out a sampling of his mythological and religious art (which he did so many of) and even though you know I am woman of faith, I really do not care for MOST religious art (for a few personal reasons- and especially Renaissance ones). But I also left out a sampling of his soft porn nudes -and that is one thing he had in common with Modigliani – they both painted those naked ladies often –
      but I hopefully I highlighted Titian’s use of color – and well, I am thinking about doing a follow up post to talk about a few of the selections I did make…
      ~~~
      oh – and hope your knee heals to be better than before. I bet it is so hard to not be out there pounding the pavement…
      1. Hi Yvette!
        Yes…so good to reconnect with you again. I think of you often and hope that your family is doing well.
        So, you’ll be proud of me, I did a little more research and now feel almost silly that I didn’t know Titian’s name. I recognized quite a few of his paintings and certainly recognize some of the influence. One of my favorite “possessions” is an oversized copy of Milton’s Paradise Lost with illustrations by Gustave Dore’. For whatever reason, this era appeals to me…though, I’ve got not a single piece of real art in my house!
        Anyhoo–thank you for the lesson and I believe that you certainly picked the best ones (yikes…there are some nasty ones, no?)
      2. oh the oversized book sounds beautiful – and I think a lo tot his work were for patrons – and well, I guess there were a few things that sold more than others… lol
  8. A really enjoyable post, Yvette. Well done on the race with two kids and a stroller. I’m über-impressed. 🙂 Interesting info about Titian. It made me think about my sister only finding out that she has huge artistic talent,, in her mid-fifties. It’s never too late to try something new and adventurous. I’ve signed up for some art classes, starting this week, just to see if I can progress beyond stick men. o+< 😀
    Like
    1. well I am not sure if it was your sister’s art – but I still remember that awesome post you shared of a family member’s Klimt style paintings – they were wonderful.
      oh – and I know you were joking – hut don’t discount the stick figures too much – because they have much value for working on proportion and form – and sometimes you can start adding balls and tubes to the stick figures – and it is actually one way to start some nice underdrawings – or just a get a feel for drawing the human body.
      I know some art teachers that have students warm up their brain by drawing stick figures at the start of every class. Sometimes with a motion assigned – or a theme – and then they discuss the quick draws with a partner and it really can serve many purposes – well I hope your class goes well….
  9. I really think there should be an Olympic event for parents with strollers – I remember those days when I could juggle two children and hills and shopping centres like a pro. How wonderful that you took them on a race with you! 😀 Titian is an inspiration for all of us xxx
    1. oh you said that right Dianne- and in hindsight I see why I was so completely exhausted during those years (when nap time was for mom too) – and I still remember when they had to fly with their car seats – and so we’d have kids in tow – car seats – and baggage – whew – but kept the arms pretty buff – lol
      But I like it much better now to do occasional family runs when everyone is running on their own….
    Another informative and interesting post. I am 63 and doing more now than I ever did. Some I want to and some I don’t, but you don’t know how much you’re capable of til the opportunity presents itself. It ain’t over til it’s over. Til then, rock on…
    1. Hey first and fabulous – well you rock! and I actually sometimes prefer a nice brisk walk to running – it depends – but walking is so awesome – with a little music playing or just some thinking… ❤ have a great day – and "peace"
  11. Blue-Ski, what an encouraging, uplifting post for me to read this day! Thank YOU! I have only begun in my pursuit of my Dreams and I am um, over 55. LOL And to know Titian greatest works were at the END of his Life, thrills me even more! So much of this world shuns the “old”, and by that I mean > 50. IF you don’t know math symbols, that means OVER 50. Come on, Y-Ski, let’s Rock and Roll and set this world on fire with our passions. Lucky YOU that you can run! Keep running and take me with you in your Heart when you do. Really really thank YOU for this awesome post!!! (((HUGS))) Rose-Ski
  13. I always enjoyed sports and games but long distance running was never been my cup of tea 🙂
    I would have managed to run 5K only a few times in life and that too during my morning jogging, so it’s quite an achievement from my perspective 🙂
    Yea, the second part about the great artist Titan, is truly inspiring… what we could do in life irrespective of the age, right?
    Thank you so much for introducing the artist to us and it’s the first time I heard of him, I need to read more 🙂
    Have a beautiful day, Yvette 🙂
